DIY Miniature Raffia Clay Pots

Today I thought I would do something with clay pots. Miniature clay pots that is. They are fun to work with and you can do so much with them. They are great to work with, in any size. I decided to do these as desktop storage or succulent planters. However, you can put whatever you want in them or gift them to someone. This is just intended to give you ideas and get your creative juices flowing.

Chalk and Raffia DIY Clay Pots

What you will need.

-Clay pots (These are just about 2.5 inches in height, but you can use any size)

-Chalk paint

-Foam brush

-Natural raffia

-Dried pumpkin Seed (Or an accessory of your choosing)

-Glue gun

-Needle and thread.

Instructions

  1. Paint the outside of the pot with the chalk paint. Set aside to dry.

Apply Chalk paint to clay pot

2. Separate enough strands of the raffia to make a ½ cm width braid. Make a knot with the strands at one end. Braid the raffia to enough length to go around the rim of the pot once. The width of the braid for this miniature size pot I choose was about ½ cm. The larger the pot the wider the braid should be.

Keep the braid as flat as possible.

3. Glue this braid around the rim of the pot. Cross and glue the ends in place. Fray the edges out about 1 inch in length.

4. Glue the pumpkin seed or any other accessory in place.

5 . Make another braid about 1 cm in width and long enough to make a 2-inch diameter mat.

Wrap and stitch mat

4. To begin making the mat, coil one end tightly and stitch in place. You can use a thread of a similar color or you can use a strip of raffia as a thread so it blends in. Alternatively, you can use your glue gun but this can get messy. Continue to wrap and stitch the braided raffia in a circular motion ensuring to keep it flat like a disc. When the mat has reached 2 inches in diameter tie off the end and stitch it down.

5. Place the pot on the mat and display any place in the home. You may plant succulents in them or use them as storage on your desk for paper clips, thumbtacks, flash drives, etc.
